Attention is one of the first cognitive skills to develop and as such plays an important role in guiding all future learning. When a child learns to pay attention, it enables them to concentrate on a task or conversation for an extended period of time, to filter out distracting information and to prevent impulse responding. Without these core attention skills children struggle to develop more complex skills such as memory, language, reading and writing.
